The USA is a fabulous destination for a family holiday – or any holiday for that matter!
Everyone speaks English, it is easy to get around (if you have a car), kids are well catered for and there are just so many different things to see and do, you could never get bored. It is also perhaps cheaper than you might think.
On our USA and Caribbean Family Trip, we spent about a month in the USA, visiting LA, Miami and then road tripping around the Deep South. It was quite honestly fabulous, and a great way to travel with children. There are plenty of interesting places to stop, so you never have to travel too far, and the country just seems very well set up for road trips.
There were so many little things that made life easy for us – like exit signs that pointed out what restaurants, gas stations and accommodation were at each exit. We never had problems finding a toilet or lunch!
Coin operated laundries seemed to be in just about every motel, and cheap rooms with fridges and microwaves were easy to come by which helped with self catering some healthy meals. There really wasn’t anything that was difficult.
We found places in general were very well set up for children, and if the kids were being a bit difficult, people did not hesitate to tell us not to worry about it. Many restaurants had high chairs and kids menus. Often smaller places had toys that would come out when they saw our kids. We were always made to feel very welcome. Our red head got a lot of attention, and we were constantly being told how beautiful she is. I think she actually got more attention than in Asia (excluding the Philippines, thankfully we didn’t get crowded with people wanting to check her out and touch her!). There are lots and lots and lots of kid focused attractions, and we fell in love with children’s museums. Playgrounds and parks are easy to find. Really, if you can’t find something that your kids like in the USA, you just aren’t trying!! :)
Accommodation in the USA for a family is great. The kids were always free and two double beds in the room seemed to be the standard. This just made life so easy. There was none of the double and triple checking if there would be a bed for the kids in the room and if there would be a charge associated like there is in Asia.
